Florida State Fair - 2008 Winner
You may recognize this piece from the Artquilts and front pages of The Jacaranda Tree. It is my art piece entitled "Chick O'the Sea" and it won 3rd place at the Florida State Fair 2008. It is the first time I entered stuff in the fair in many many years and I had a lot of competition. I am very happy with my little ribbon. I also won first place & third place ribbons in Scrapbooking.
This piece is a combination of different techniques. I started by embellishing fabrics into a 15x15 piece of TimTex. I cut several circles into the base and put a sheer fabric with glitz on the back of the holes, laid threads all over piece, covered it with a sea foam green tulle and did a bunch of free motion embroidery (FME). Off the the embroidery machine to add a mermaid, and then hand beading and adding threads and yarns to the piece. That is mermaid hair I added to her head. Finally I made a board of silk dupioni and machine embroidered sea plants all around the border. In the corners I added turquoise stones and beads.
It was lots of fun and I look forward to making more art quilts! Maybe I can make one for you...
